BELGRADE — If found guilty, the suspect in the murder of a 15-year-old girl could be sent to prison for 30 to 40 years, as Serbia has abolished the death penalty.
This is what Justice Minister Nikola Selaković told reporters on Thursday, after the police announced that they had a suspect in custody for the murder of Tijana Jurić, who was abducted and murdered last month.

In our organization,Lawyers Committee for Human Rights (YUCOM) , since it was established in 1997, we only have lawyers. The first lawyer, defender of human rights and also the YUCOM President Biljana Kovačević-Vučo was the originator of the idea that YUCOM should provide free legal aid.

She had been enduring insults and was persecuted for years before she decided to take her friend’s advice and make a phone call to an NGO from Belgrade. At the time, she knew little about those organisations, let alone what they were dealing with; yet, she tried to receive legal aid from the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights (YUCOM) https://en.www.yucom.org.rs/. A.M. has found success and she is no longer the subject of discrimination and is one of many citizens of Serbia, who have managed to protect their human and civil rights by utilising YUCOM’s aid.
The main aim of the project is moving the rule of law agenda forward, supporting judicial reform in the region and reducing corruption.

About the project: Right to free legal aid is one of the fundamental rights of democratic society. It enables equal access to justice for all citizens. Constitution of Serbia foresees existence of Law on free legal aid, but it has not been adopted yet, this means that base for free legal aid system does not exist. Very significant issue is financial sustainability of the free legal aid system.
