CONFERENCE: “Stairways to Freedom” – YUCOM’s Annual Report

As a part of celebrating 25 years of the Lawyers’ Committee for Human Rights Committee – YUCOM, it is our great pleasure to invite you to the conference “Stairways to Freedom” that is going to be organized on the occasion of presenting YUCOM’s Annual Report on Friday, October 21st 2022. The conference will start at 12:00 PM, in the Conference Hall of the House of Human Rights and Democracy in 4, Kneza Milosa Street, Belgrade. Embassy of the Czech Republic in Belgrade has supported the event.
In the first panel, the results of YUCOM’s work on providing free legal for the reporting period will be presented, as well as a summary of the significant issues that citizens addressed us during the abovementioned period. Introducing examples from practice, we will discuss the shortcomings in the application of the Law on Free Legal Aid.
Events in the field of human rights and justice in the period 2020-2022, which are also described in the Report, bring to the fore violations of basic freedoms, particularly freedom of assembly and freedom of expression. The entire reporting period was marked by protests – whether we are talking about opposing the announced disproportionate measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, environmental protests, protests against the promotion of war crimes, or women’s solidarity protests. All of them were followed or were a consequence of human rights violations, therefore, we are dedicating the second panel to the fight for the respect and enjoyment of these rights in Serbia, with a special focus on their protection before the courts of the Republic of Serbia.
