Germany will continue to strongly support Serbia on it’s path to the European Union, stated today the Ambassador of Germayn Axel Dittmann.

At the National Assembly on the occassion of the opening of the conference on Chapter 23 on judiciary and fundamental rights, Dittman said that it is very important for Serbia that this Chapter was opened in July

– By opening the Chapter 23 Serbia took an important step forward. It is now important that the Action Plan measures are put into practice. In this a big role plays the reform of the judicial system. It is of crucial importance to build a legal system that is based on respect for the rule of law and strong and independent prosecution and judiciary – said Dittmann.

The Chapter 23 is important because it concerns the underlying values and principles on which the European Union is founded: democracy, rule of law and respect for human rights, independent judiciary, freedom of thought and fight against corruption.

– These topics from Chapter 23 are essential for Serbia’s path toward the European Union. Crucial for Serbia itself is the improvement of the rule of law since it is key for improving the investment climate and thus for sustainable economic development of Serbia. Also, improvement of the rule of law is important for strengthening the rights of each citizen – said Dittmann.

He also added that Germany supports the reform process in Serbia.

– Significant funds have been allocated from Serbian-German cooperation to improve good governance and to create stable, reliable, institutional framework. For the success of these important reforms it is important to have a comprehensive dialogue about the necessary reform measures. This is a challenge that the government and civil society in general need to face – stated Dittmann.
