It is our great pleasure to invite you to the conference “Rule of Law, Access to Justice” that Lawyers’ Committee for Human Rights YUCOM is organizing on Friday, October 20th 2017. The conference will start at 11:00 AM in the House of Human Rights and Democracy (Conference Hall) in 4, Kneza Milosa Street, Belgrade. Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Office for Human and Minority Rights of the Republic of Serbia has supported the event.
YUCOM organization is celebrating 20 years since it has been established, therefore in the introductory address there will be presented a brief overview of YUCOM’s work in the past 20 years and the experience of continual cooperation with the organization from the perspective of diplomatic missions, state and independent institutions, as well as long-standing associates and members. It will also be presented YUCOM’s report for the period 2016-2017.
The other two thematic units will be dedicated to the right to Free Legal Aid and the Universal Periodic Review on human right situation in Serbia. The lack of adequate Law on Free Legal Aid, increasingly affect the restrictions on access to justice because of which citizens themselves suffer the most. Through discussion, the participants will try to provide answers for key issues in preventing the adoption of the law and whether this situation can be overcome through a dialogue of interested actors.
In the framework of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), Serbia will in the beginning of 2018 give a review of the improvement of human rights in the past period. As in this process of the United Nations, Civil Society Organizations play a significant role, the final segment of the conference will be dedicated to presenting the results of monitoring UPR recommendations as well as the support that civil society has been providing within the process.
