On the one hand, the publication is an output of the KOFF Conference “Human Rights Defenders at Risk: What measures does Switzerland take?” in June 2014. On the other hand, the Essential is meant to be a further step in an on-going and long-term process towards an enhanced protection of human rights defenders, which involves different actors complementing each other’s efforts on different levels. KOFF is convinced that the political will of Switzerland expressed in the Swiss guidelines on the protection of human rights defenders, as well as the commitment of numerous non-governmental and civil society organizations in Switzerland and abroad offer promising opportunities to take this process further.
